All you wanted to know

The cost of certification of radio-electronic means and emitting devices in the modern world of technology is quite an interesting topic, because technologies replace each other so quickly, that sometimes, without fully understanding one, you have to master a new one, since the previous technology is already irrevocably outdated or is already part of the new one and does not require separate testing.

In this article, we will look at how the availability of technology in general affects the cost of obtaining a Certificate of Conformity (Type Examination Certificate).

We will give an example of calculating the cost of certification for obtaining a certificate of conformity (type examination certificate) for devices that include GSM 900/1800 and/or CDMA800/CDMA2000 (for voice transmission), 1X EV-DO, LTE, LTE+, UMTS, HSDPA, HSDPA+, GPRS, EDGE, 5Ge,5G, 5G+, ZigBee and Thread, Bluetooth Mesh, as well as RFID, let's take a closer look at how the presence or absence of the above communication ranges and technologies affects the cost of certification.

For example, let's take three devices built on SoC (a single-chip system that performs the functions of an entire device) from Nordic Semiconductor :

  • Device 1:

The NRF51822 is an all-in-one ultra-low power SoC ideal for proprietary Bluetooth® Low Energy and 2.4GHz wireless applications. It is built on a 32-bit ARM® Cortex ™ -M0 processor with 256/128 KB flash and 32/16 KB RAM. The flexible 2.4GHz radio supports proprietary Bluetooth Low Energy and 2.4GHz protocols such as Gazell.

  • Device 2:

The NRF51422 is a versatile ultra-low power SoC ideal for ANT, Bluetooth® Low Energy and 2.4GHz wireless applications. It is built on a 32-bit ARM® Cortex ™ -M0 processor with 256/128 KB flash and 32/16 KB RAM. The flexible 2.4GHz radio supports proprietary Bluetooth Low Energy, ANT and 2.4GHz protocols such as Gazell.

  • Device 3:

NRF5340 is a versatile ultra-low power SoC supporting a wide range of wireless protocols. It supports Bluetooth Low Energy and is capable of all the roles of angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD) in Bluetooth direction finding. In addition, it supports LE Audio, 2Mbps high bandwidth, ad extensions, and long distances. Network protocols such as Bluetooth Mesh, Thread, and Zigbee can run concurrently with Bluetooth LE, allowing smartphones to allocate, commission, configure, and control mesh nodes. Proprietary protocols NFC, ANT, 802.15.4 and 2.4 GHz are also supported.

SoC data is used in smart home systems, personal password storage devices, as well as in various electronics and industrial equipment and the automotive industry.

At first glance, it may seem that the difference between these modules is not great, but this is only at first glance.

Before doing the calculations, we want to remind you of the reasons for pricing:

You can find out how the Certification cost is formed (what is taken into account and affects the formation of the price) with examples by clicking on the link.

All calculations are carried out by the conformity assessment body based on Resolutions of the Cabinet of Ministers of UFCraine "On approval of the Rules for determining the cost of work on assessing compliance with the requirements of technical regulations, are carried out by designated conformity assessment bodies and recognized independent organizations" dated July 12, 2017 No. 514

An individual approach is applied to each client, in connection with which the numbers appearing in the formulas, as well as the result of the calculations, can be attracted both up and down, depending on various factors described on this site. This article is for informational purposes only.

In turn, Unus Finis conducts all calculations for services individually for each customer, in accordance with internal regulations and the level of complexity, which is described in the article "Tariffs for the services of Unus Finis".

The cost of certification of devices built on the above SoCs will look like this:

Device Certification Example - 1

Given: Device 1 (NRF51822)

Technical data (only those that are important for testing to calculate the cost of certification):

  1. Data interface: Bluetooth 5.0
  2. Protocols: Bluetooth Low Energy
  3. Battery powered device: CR2032

Calculate the cost of certification using the formula:

"WCB" + "PKMU 514" = UAH 34000 (excluding the cost of "UFC")

“WCB” + “PKMU 514” + “UFC” = UAH 56,000 (turnkey)

Device Certification Example - 2

Given: Device 2 (NRF51422)

Technical data (only those that are important for testing to calculate the cost of certification):

  1. Data interface: Bluetooth 5.0
  2. Protocols: Bluetooth Low Energy, ANT
  3. Battery powered device: CR2032

Calculate the cost of certification using the formula:

"WCB" + "PKMU 514" = UAH 39000 (excluding the cost of "UFC")

"WCB" + "PKMU 514" + "UFC" = 61000 UAH. (turnkey)

Device Certification Example - 3

Given: Device 3 (NRF5340)

Technical data (only those that are important for testing to calculate the cost of certification):

  1. Data interface: Bluetooth 5.0
  2. Protocols: Bluetooth Low Energy, ANT, Thread, Zigbee, NFC and RFID
  3. Battery powered device: CR2032

Calculate the cost of certification using the formula:

"WCB" + "PKMU 514" = UAH 59000 (excluding the cost of "UFC")

“WCB” + “PKMU 514” + “UFC” = UAH 81000 (turnkey)

As you may have noticed, the Bluetooth SoC is also different and can support many protocols that you might not even know about. And do not suspect that the presence of additional protocols may affect the cost of certification. We strongly recommend that before you certify your device for the UFCrainian market, consult with the specialists of our company.

There are many such examples. We will give another example of calculating the cost of certification to obtain a certificate of conformity (type examination certificate) for devices that include GSM 900/1800 and/or CDMA800/CDMA2000 (for voice transmission), 1X EV-DO, LTE, LTE+, UMTS protocols , HSDPA, HSDPA+, GPRS, EDGE, 5Ge,5G, 5G+, ZigBee and Thread, Bluetooth Mesh, and RFID. In this case, we will take two conditional smartphones with the same functions, the average price range:

  • Smartphone 1: GSM (2G), 3G, 4G LTE (all other functions are identical to Smartphone 2)
  • Smartphone 2: GSM (2G), 3G, 4G LTE, 5G NR (aka 5G and 5G+) (all other features are identical to Smartphone 1)

The difference in the cost of certification, that is, assessing compliance with the Technical Regulations and obtaining a Type Examination Certificate, will be approximately UAH 15,000-20,000 thousand between Smartphone 1 and Smartphone 2. This is due to the testing of two additional radio frequency bands in which Smartphone 2 of the new generations.

You can read more about the cost of certification (assessment of compliance with technical regulations) of smartphones, with examples of calculations and figures in our article: The cost of device certification, included which includes three or more radio modules (data transfer technologies) from smart watches to smartphones. In this case, we are not talking about the cost in general, but about how the absence or presence of one frequency range or technology affects the cost of certification.

We remind you that all the figures given in this article are for guidance only and may vary both up and down. All calculations are carried out individually for each customer, taking into account all his wishes and possibilities.
